Beijing, China Chapter Meeting
On Economic War and Financial Catastrophe, followed by FRM/ERP Recognition Ceremony and Study Group Formation
Topic:
On Economic War and Financial Catastrophe: Conquistadors, Bankers and the Tragedy of the Commons
FRM® / ERP® Recognition Ceremony and Study Group Formation
Synopsis:
Economic war has become a weasel word for politicians, journalists, and economists. However, what is a sound definition? What makes economic war different from competition, especially creative destruction in the sense of Schumpeter? What is the economic war dimension of the world financial crisis? Who are the warriors and soldiers?
After defining economic war within a general concept of rivalry, Professor h.c. Ulrich Blum will identify the warriors and the institutional framework that allows economic war to break out. Professor Blum will explain that they are related to the situation prior to the world financial crisis to show its fragility, i.e. the “sleepwalker” situation.
Professor Blum will provide evidence how, historically similar to conquistadors, bankers were able to exploit markets, accumulate wealth and let the public – after having stripped bare the cropland – bear the costs.
Professor Blum will conclude that the lesson learned should not be bankers’ bashing, but relate to a responsible political management of institutions. Social market-economy policies suggest enforcing a new balance between individual responsibility, accountability and liability.
The presentation will be followed by a ceremony that will honor local Members who are newly Certified, as well as those that successfully passed the FRM and ERP Exams.
During the reception that follows, FRM and ERP Exam candidates will be invited to network and organize into local study groups in preparation for the FRM and ERP Exams.
